I am an experienced and successful medical equipment sales professional. Most of my career was spent calling on physicians, informing them about my products and getting to know them in the process.
I loved what I did for a living. But it cost me.
I was just working too many hours. I was away from my family. At some point I realized I was sacrificing my life for a job. So I became a student of wealth creation. I found out what the wealthy were doing – and I did the same things. And it worked!
Now that I’ve achieved my goals, I’d like to give back to the medical profession I came to know and respect so much.
The Income of Primary Care Physicians is Eroding
You see, I witnessed something disturbing during all of those years. I became very familiar with the health care professionals I called on. They would even tell me their concerns and problems. And I saw that their income was eroding over the years – especially in the case of primary care physicians.
Primary care physicians – the “front line of health care” – have been on the squeeze for many years. Already, they are the lowest paid and yet the hardest working of all medical professionals. They make up to 5 times less than their specialist counterparts!
Not only that, but the insurance companies have put pressure on these doctors – a lot of pressure. Some primary care physicians see 100 patients per week or more – leaving them with about 10 minutes per patient – and for a paltry reimbursement that they have to wait for weeks, if not months, to get.
To top it off, most of them graduated with extremely large student debt – as much as $150K! So many of them are starting from a negative financial position… before they ever open their doors. And we won’t even mention medical malpractice insurance premiums!
Enter Health Care Reform
I was astounded by challenges faced by primary care physicians. Their work is vital to the community, and I knew they deserved more.
I understand why our nation is facing a shortage of primary care physicians – it just doesn’t make sense for someone with all the training and expertise that a doctor has to make less money than he or she is worth. In fact, some of the primary care doctors I worked with started asking themselves if it was even worth it at all.

While we are still struggling to understand exactly when and how this will affect us, one thing is clear: With all of the issues surrounding the health care debate, this erosion of income for primary care physicians will undoubtedly continue.
Whether it’s by increased patient loads – or by even more cuts in reimbursements as insurance companies struggle to make up the difference to their bottom lines – it’s the primary care physician who is likely to hurt the most from what is to come.
